Even as we near the seven month mark of Covid-19’s arrival to the U.S., the Hopi Reservation and Navajo Nation are at high risk for a rapid and devastating spread of the virus. Unemployment is near 50-60% in these communities, already stricken by poor access to quality food and hygienic supplies. Their health outlook is equally concerning, as rates of asthma, diabetes, cancer, and other immunocompromising conditions have historically been very high.
Fortunately, a grassroots effort led by enrolled tribal members seeks to circumvent bureaucratic red tape and provide much- needed support. In fact, they’ve already raised over $5.5million, and are in need of a final push to reach their $7 million goal.
Funds raised will be used to buy and deliver PPE, diapers, groceries, water, and other necessary items to safe transfer locations. They also aim to stop the spread of Covid 19 on these reservations by engaging volunteers to sew masks for medical workers and first responders—and by investing in a media campaign to urge people to stay home, socially distance, and to embrace sterilization practices.
